Pocono Libertarians Background
Every locality has on-going discussions about community and national issues. They occur in service clubs, community organizations or the media. More often than not, though, they center on how to use the power of government to improve conditions or to solve problems, with a firm conviction that government can solve all problems and that it can do no harm.
Libertarians take issue with the involuntary means government uses to attain its ends. Mandates and prohibitions invariably limit the allowable range of experimentation. Freedom allows spontaneous order, which is seen in systems as diverse as artificial neural networks, agoric computers, biological evolution, ecosystems, and free-market economies. Many of the things that the government tries to do from good intentions could be better handled by spontaneous voluntary systems, and often governments attempts to impose solutions to problems do more harm than good.
Investor's Business Daily and the internationally published Financial Times featured stories pointing out the exponential growth of libertarian think-tanks and discussion clubs, like ours, which are once again focusing on the eternal conflict between government and freedom.
Founded in 1991, the Pocono Libertarians is a free monthly discussion forum bringing to Monroe County, Pennsylvania, interesting speakers and thought-provoking topics consistent with the philosophy of individual liberty, personal responsibility, free markets, and choice in all matters. It is the goal of the Pocono Libertarians to inject into the local dialog the premise that freedom does matter. To that end, we sponsor a free monthly discussion forum usually held at 7pm, the third Thursday of each month. We are proud of the programs we've hosted in our thirteen year history.
Our monthly op-ed column entitled, "The Liberty Corner" can be read in the award-winning Community Express newspaper distributed throughout our area.
Our motto is, in the words of the late Nobel laureate Friedrich A. Hayek, " to make the building of a free society once more an intellectual adventure."
